Many people talk about success, but my guest this week has actually been there and done it. Nine years in the army physical training corps prepared him for an athletic career, which led to major Olympic and world class achievements. his greatest individual triumph was becoming the European champion while breaking David Hemery’s 22-year-old British 400m hurdle record; a record that still stands to this day.
However, he will probably always be remembered for being part of our iconic 4 x 400m relay team that beat the mighty Americans and clinched the gold at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo.
As well as working in the media, he has over the last 25 years developed his passion for public speaking. He is one of the biggest personalities you’ll ever meet. My guest is the one and only Kriss Akabusi.
Kriss Akabusi rose to fame on the athletics track, where his greatest individual triumph was winning the gold medal in the 1990 European Championships. This was the day he beat David Hemery’s British record for the 400m hurdles- a record that he still holds to this day! He will also always be remembered for helping Britain clinch the gold from the mighty Americans at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo. Having amassed three Olympic medals, as well as World, European and Commonwealth titles, Kriss was bestowed with an even greater honour in 1992: an MBE awarded by her Majesty the Queen in recognition of his services to the country through athletics.
Kriss’ first foray into television and entertainment came when he presented Channel 4’s hit breakfast show, The Big Breakfast. This was followed with a full-time position as co-presenter of the BBC’s legendary Record Breakers, as well as presenting various other children’s TV programmes. Today, Kriss is regularly consulted on a variety of radio and television programmes, discussing topics ranging from sport to business. He is also a regular contributor to Sky News’ Paper Review Programme.
For over 25 years, Kriss has provided high-energy, inspirational speeches, workshops, peer mentoring and coaching for businesses and executives across the UK. Kriss Akabusi MBE and Executive Director of The Akabusi Company is a seasoned executive coach and trusted advisor. He is an accredited coach from the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara in addition to being a Clarity 4D and Motivational Maps Practitioner.
Kriss was born in 1958 to Nigerian parents. His story- coming up through the social care system, growing up in the children’s home, joining the army & realising his potential- is nothing short of awe-inspiring!
He is the founding Director and Chairman of TACT (The Akabusi Charitable Trust) and a NGO (Non-governmental organisation) in Nigeria, designed to prevent water born diseases, and develop social cohesion. This is done by providing potable water by drilling bore holes and providing workshops and training around health issues and social responsibility.
Filled with humour, passion, and authenticity, Kriss Akabusi’s motivational presentations are an inspirational and unforgettable addition to any conference. He leaves listeners on a high, and ready to deliver success in the arena. Each presentation tailored to the individual clients’ requirements.
In addition to Keynote presentations, Kriss also leads motivational workshops that focus on getting your team onboard, onside and working together in an engaging and impactful way.
