Alain Robert is the world’s leading free climber and is known around the world as the “Urban Climber” or “Spiderman”. He climbs cliffs, mountains, gorges and has climbed 145 of the tallest buildings in the world including the Burj Khalifa in Dubai without ropes or safety equipment of any kind – just his bare hands.
In 1997, he climbed without authorisation the world’s tallest skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur. The impact on the media was so great that the Sabah Foundation asked him to climb its building in Borneo. With government authorisation, the event grew enormously, drawing a crowd of 15,000 people and raising over $150k. His greatest success was his ascent of the National Bank of Abu Dhabi with over 150,000 spectators!
To Alain, a city is like a range of mountains, with one little difference – there will always be new skyscrapers under construction. Alain is known for his bold ascents, but the public is unaware that he often climbs to collect money for charity.
At the age of 19 he spent 5 days in a coma and suffered multiple fractures following a serious fall. The prognosis was that he would never climb again and resulted in Alain developing vertigo. A year later, Alain went back to cliff climbing and was soon stronger than ever. Juan Antonio Samaranche gave him the IOC (International Olympic Committee) award for his performance. He also achieved a world record for the most extreme solo performance in the gorge of the Verdon (south of France).
Despite suffering from vertigo, epilepsy and being medically assessed as permanently 66% disabled, Alain has achieved a global celebrity status. Alain is now officially listed in the ‘World Hall of Fame of Top 100 Athletes of All Time’, alongside other greats such as; Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Pelé.
Alain Robert’s talks are spellbinding, and at the end, he achieves standing ovations. Like his climbing, he demonstrates the same focus and leadership while speaking at conventions and seminars around the world. Alain also organizes incentive trips and provides certified training and instruction. Because of his popularity with the media and the public, he also accepts offers to climb for various special events.
"Authorities arrest me, release me, and then invite me back to host public events. I think it's interesting." Alain
