Caspar Berry speaks in his capacity as a former professional poker player who lived and worked in Las Vegas for three years and went on to become the UK’s premier poker TV commentator and the poker advisor on Casino Royale. He uses the metaphor of poker as a vehicle to communicate universally resonant messages around the need for individuals and companies to take risk and seize opportunities. Caspar Berry, started his career as the lead in one of BBC1’s flagship television programs before attending Cambridge where he was a prolific theatre director. While at university, he worked with a wealth of talent in ‘The Footlights’ and wrote his first screenplay produced by Film Four. By the time he was 23, Caspar was writing for Miramax and Columbia Tri Star. At age 25, he moved to Las Vegas to become a professional poker player where he spent 3 years making a good living pitting his wits against the game’s best-known players.

In 2002, Caspar returned to the U.K. where he co-founded Twenty First Century Media and built it into the fastest growing audio visual media company in North East England before selling it in 2008 to Bob Geldof’s media giant, Ten Alps.

Caspar has hosted more than 400 television shows including Poker Night Live, Sky Poker and Sky Sports. He has been a poker strategy writer for Flush magazine and was one of the poker advisers for the James Bond film, “Casino Royale.”

While the underlying mechanism of Caspar’s material is always centered around the ways in which we make decisions and embrace risk, these are very flexible tools which can be used to address a range of themes such as change, innovation, courage, leadership, differentiation, entrepreneurship  and, fundamentally, making great decisions in this new age of uncertainty.

Crucially, Caspar is always focused on the corporate/business significance of everything he speaks about. Poker is just a metaphor throughout and – importantly – gambling is never approved or endorsed. Indeed, while poker can and often is played with clients who want it, the whole point of the sessions is to take the gamble OUT of everything we do and make better decisions for the long term. Story, maths, metaphor and logic are brought together to create a speech that is funny, challenging, thought-provoking and, at its best, transformative.

Risk Taking and Decision-Making in Poker, Business and Life

While the subject of decision making is unimaginably vast and profound, it is important that each speech has a kind of key message and the principal tenet of this one is that all decisions are essentially investment decisions and that all of us as decision makers are essentially investors every moment of every day. In order to be great decision makers - or investors - we need to understand the brilliance, but also the limitations and flaws, of our innate judgement and decision making mechanism. The speech identifies and defines the origins of fear of failure and concludes by identifying how we embrace this fear in order to motivate us to make more courageous and more effective decisions. It uses poker as a metaphor for decision making in order to demonstrate how to manage risk.

All innovation speakers propagate the same basic message: you have to learn how to change, and fast. But only a few innovation speakers have a unique and compelling metaphor to drive it home. Because what does it take to innovate successfully? Literally hundreds of failures along the way... Like a poker player, you need to lose in the short term in order to succeed in the final analysis, when it counts the most. Emphasising the need for this pain because in a world of continual change, the companies who embrace this philosophy and create similar internal alignment will be best placed to come through the uncertainty ahead.

Leadership, Uncertainty, Intuition and Judgement

This speech looks at what courage and bravery are and uses material like the 7/7 testimonies to ask whether we all have courage within us and whether leadership is the product of circumstance or birth. It drawn on cutting-edge research in psychology and neurology and asks to what extent we're prisoners of our own genetics and chemistry and to what extent we shape our own destiny. Caspar's approach to leadership training is that it should focus on success in the long term and give practical methods for balancing this with short term demands.

Motivation and Persuasion

Effective motivation and persuasion techniques are crucial in business today. From motivating a sales team to effectively persuading customers and clients to buy and act in a certain way. This speech is about why we do what we do, but specifically aimed at people who have to motivate and influence others. Once you understand HOW and WHY someone is making their decisions, it becomes so much easier - in both poker and business - to influence them to make different ones!

Caspar's presentation stimulated a great deal of very productive discussion about all our attitudes to risk taking and really helped crystallise some of the critical decisions we need to make across the business. It helped us understand each other as individuals and will be talked about and referenced for a long time to come. We would highly recommend it to any executive team in business.

Caspar's ability to tailor his story and examples to the topic at hand were superb - how to make the right business decisions in a world of uncertainty. I would definitely recommend Caspar's session to other colleagues and to other peers in the industry. His story is very entertaining and his delivery is polished.
