Sir Clive Woodward

Team GB Director of Sport, London 2012 & England’s Rugby World Cup Winning Head Coach 2003

Sir Clive Woodward is the World Cup-winning Head Coach who led England’s rugby players to World Cup glory in Australia in 2003.  A former England International and British & Irish Lion himself, during Clive’s tenure as Head Coach England moved from 6th in the world to being the number one ranked team, winning every trophy an England team can win.

In 2006 Clive joined the British Olympic Association as Team GB’s Director of Sport.  He worked in close partnership with key stakeholders in British Sport to support the national coaches and athletes at the Beijing & Vancouver Olympics as well as to deliver Team Britain’s most successful Olympic Games at London 2012.

Clive is currently the Founder and Chairman of Hive Learning – an app which has digitised Clive’s coaching methods and is designed to improve the quality of learning in business and sport.  Alongside his role as the Director of Sport for the APEX2100 International Ski Academy which aims to become the World’s Leading High-Performance Academy for young, aspiring athletes wanting to achieve their goals in Alpine Skiing.

Early in his career, Clive enjoyed success on the pitch, winning 21 caps as a player and twice touring with the British Lions. He also worked in business, first with Rank Xerox in the UK and Australia. He then became sales director of a leasing company within the Ford Group, before forming his own successful leasing operation.

Clive was universally credited with bringing professionalism, cutting-edge techniques and new management skills to English rugby. As he explains in talks, the squad’s achievements were built on back-room expertise, close attention to detail, thorough mental and physical preparation, competitor analysis and ruthless decision-making.

After leaving rugby Clive became Technical Director and Director of Football at Southampton, and a UEFA qualifiedfootball coach, before joining the British Olympic Association with a mission to integrate coaches and athletes from all sports into Team GB. London 2012 produced the most successful British performance of the modern era, with 65 medals including 29 golds.

As a renowned speaker, Clive delivers thought-provoking, engaging and entertaining keynotes tailored to the requirements of each organisation he works with. Carefully crafted to inspire, motivate and challenge, Clive’s presentations blend practical tools with inspiring video insights from his career as a businessman, athlete and coach acting as a storied backdrop. The philosophies inherent in the development of high-performance teams are the result of a cross-pollination of ideas from Clive’s experience of business and sport. The qualities that identify a leader are common to both business and sporting environments. The ability to think clearly under pressure is as key to success in the boardroom as it is in the cauldron of a sell-out international fixture. Clive Woodward’s success lies in his ability to communicate and instil often challenging ideas with a practical and proven methodology.

Clive also offers Digital Learning programmes on The DNA of a Champion (How to maximise your talent in the workplace) and Inclusion Works (How to manage Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace).  Please contact us if you would be interested in hearing more about these programmes.

Tackling Change

Clive's reputation as an innovative leader is driven by his determined approach to challenge the traditional school of thought and find new, different ways of operating and this has never been more important in today’s ever changing corporate world. In his talk on “Tackling Change” Clive will highlight why it is important to embrace change and illustrate how creating a culture of relentless learning can help teams and organisations to adapt and succeed.

One Team

Focused on “creating an environment so good that everyone wants to be a part of and nobody ever wants to leave,” One Team encapsulates the collaborative leadership model Clive successfully applied to the World Cup winning England rugby team and Team GB at London 2012.

DNA of a Champion

Based on the notion that “Great Teams Are Made of Great Individuals”, Clive has identified four criteria, which he believes characterise a champion individual or team in both business and sport. ‘The DNA of a Champion’ details each of these criteria, but also how they can be coached to achieve high performing teams.

Winning doesn't happen in straight lines - Success from set backs

Success is not always a continuous series of victories. It is important that indiviuals and teams learn how to improve from their set-backs and it is how they are handled, that is the making of a great team.

Sponge vs Rock - Making Learning Stick

A successful coach and leader is one who can effectively capture and share their knowledge. Clive believes teams who assume they have all the knowledge are likely to come second, whether in sport or business. Winning individuals and teams seek out continuous learning to further expand their skill-set in response to changing environments and new developments.

100 Things 1% Better - Change Thinking

Clive's reputation as an innovative leader is driven by his determined approach to challenge the traditional school of thought and find new, different ways of operating. In ‘Change Thinking’ he highlights where his inspiration for change originated and illustrates how effective change creates a dynamic and responsive culture.

Thank you very much for presenting at our Senior Leadership meeting...and helping to make it a memorable and highly-productive event...your presentation was one of the best examples I've seen in demonstrating how building a successful team in business or sport requires similar strategies...the feedback from those attending has been excellent.

Warm, human! Great speaker. The content was a perfect fit Analytics in Sport vs. Analytics in Business. He asked lots of good questions beforehand to ensure he referenced relevant Oracle pieces. Our audience loved him and it was a great intro to the day.
