Hayley Barnard

Expert on Diversity and Inclusion and Unconscious Bias

Hayley Barnard is an expert on Diversity and Inclusion and Unconscious Bias. She is the Managing Director and Lead Strategist of MIX Diversity Developers and is a board level advisor to a number of FTSE 100 companies.

Hayley focuses on helping organisations become more innovative and profitable through developing both a more diverse workforce and diverse customer base. Her clients include Aspect Capital, BAE Systems, Diageo, Babcock and T-Systems.

After quickly rising to become General Manager of Sir Chay Blyth’s ‘Challenge Business’ at just 23, Hayley Barnard took the decision to start her own corporate communications and sponsorship business with her twin sister of which she is still a director. After over a decade and a half trading she went to co-found MIX Diversity Developers, alongside other non-exec director roles.

One of the most innovative projects that Hayley has headed up is the LeasePlan Women’s Arctic Challenge in which she co-led a team of women on a traverse of Baffin Island, trekking and camping for 11 days at minus 40 degrees C. MIX worked with LeasePlan to develop this unique platform to communicate the gender balance issue and challenge unconscious bias within their company.

Hayley is a professional speaker, consultant and media commentator on subjects including gender balanced workplaces, inclusive leadership, unconscious bias, harnessing greater ethnicity in business, Autism in the workplace and Age and Employment. She is passionate about inspiring business leaders to adopt the principle that diversity isn’t about difference, it’s about excellence.  She tackles issues surrounding unconscious bias and inclusiveness with humour, ensuring that her ideas have real value for audiences’ working lives.

Future Proofing Leadership

Developing leaders to be more inclusive in their leadership and management style is essential for any organisation that wants to see significant progress in diversity and inclusion (D&I). Yet many leaders have D&I fatigue – they either see it as not their problem or that it is simply concerned with positive discrimination, specifically around gender and ethnicity. They don’t have a good understanding of why inclusion is good for them and good for business or what they should do about it. This session aims to address that. Using inspiring ‘best practice’ stories combined with the latest research

Practical Inclusive Leadership

Suitable for senior executives and people managers, this session (deliverable in person or via Webex) helps leaders appreciate the solid business case for a more collaborative and inclusive style of leadership. Leaders explore ‘what’s it like to be on the other side of you?’ Traits of an inclusive leader are shared and used to inform what actions or small changes need to be made in leadership style that could have a significant impact on inclusion and drive diversity.

Biased, Who Me?

A light-hearted introduction to unconscious bias which works well for general sessions in a full company conference as it appeals to all levels of employees.

Hayley was great at using stories to illustrate the subject and made it accessible for the audience, most of whom had no knowledge of Unconscious Bias before the session. She spoke with humility about her own biases and was able to help others start to see theirs without being accusatory. Her style is very conversational and relaxed.

Hayley came to talk with our Diversi-T network about unconscious bias. Hayley‘s knowledge, passion and style really struck a cord with us and she has since returned to T-Systems to do some more in depth work with our board of directors and present to all our people managers on unconscious bias and how recognising and understanding its impact can be used to instigate positive change in our organisation.

Hayley provided a comprehensive briefing to our Executive Board, immediately setting the room at ease with her engaging and personable manner. The directors found the session and exercises insightful, and discussion flowed freely and openly. The impact has been immediate, with our first female Board appointment, a revised approach to recruitment (leading to us hiring a female developer), and a revised flexible working policy. Hayley's contribution was vital - she demonstrated that Diversity and Inclusion isn't an HR issue but a company-wide opportunity.

Aspect Capital

Hayley delivered an energetic, engaging and thought provoking talk for International Women’s Day, sharing not only her incredible knowledge of the topics of unconscious bias & diversity, but really bringing it to life with some of her own fascinating life experiences. Hayley is an inspiring woman who really knows her stuff and has helped the team think differently.
