Jake Meyer

World Record Breaking Mountaineer and Adventurer

Jake Meyer is an experienced public speaker whose incredible story of climbing Mt Everest aged only 21 is an inspirational tale of determination, tenacity and an unerring will to succeed.

Jake was only 14 when he set his sights on wanting to climb the ‘7 Summits’ – the highest mountain on each continent. At 6.30am on the 4th June 2005, aged only 21 and 135 days old, he reached the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world and his 7th continental highpoint. At the time, he was the youngest Briton to climb Mt Everest, and the youngest man in the world to complete the 7 Summits.

Not content with just the 7 Summits, he also holds the record for the fastest ascent of the highest mountain in each of the 48 states in the contiguous USA. This culminated in 48 mountains, 350 miles of trekking, 100,000ft of climbing and 15,000 miles of driving in 23 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes. He has also made first ascents of mountains and routes in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, holds the record for the fastest ascent of the highest point in every county in England, and numerous expeditions to Africa and South America. In 2009 he spent 2 months in Pakistan on K2, the second highest mountain in the world and arguably the most difficult and dangerous (with a 1 in 4 death rate). He reached 7700m without oxygen before bad snow conditions forced a retreat to safety. Jake returned to K2 in 2016 as part of the first British Team to attempt the mountain in over a decade – which was described as ‘probably the strongest team on the mountain’. Again unfortunately, the summit wasn’t to be – during the summit attempt, a huge avalanche destroyed Camp 3 (7300m), calling a halt to all climbing for that season.

In 2018 Jake returned to K2 for his third attempt. After acclimatising on Broad Peak (the 12th highest mountain in the world) Jake and his team mate Tomas along with 3 Sherpas reached the summit of K2 at 0800 on 21st July 2018. For Jake it was an incredible end to a 13 year dream and 10 years of trying, and proved and determination and perseverance can pay off in the end.

In 2010 Jake Meyer joined the Inspirational Development Group as a consultant. IDG offers first-class training designed to transform the behaviour of individuals and teams, and lead to sustainable change within an organisation. They offer a range of bespoke Leadership Development programmes focussing on the interlocking areas of Leadership, Followership and Partnership, to produce accomplished leaders who are also effective followers and highly skilled team players.

He was an ambassador to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme, and regularly presented the Gold awards at St James’s Palace, and has worked closely with a number of charities including Walking With The Wounded, Help for Heroes, The Prince’s Trust, the Prince’s Teaching Institute, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the CAIRN Trust.

Jake is also a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve, and in 2012 spent 6.5 months in Afghanistan as a Battlegroup Influence and Consequence Management Officer.

Jake Meyer is available as a thought-provoking, inspirational and motivational speaker for events around the world. His presentation can be tailored specifically to the audience and to fulfil the aims and objectives of the client. He is comfortable providing focused and intimate discussion with small teams of Senior Executives, or presenting to large audiences of 1800+.

Clarity of the goal

A clear and unambiguous aim is the corner-stone of any project and gives you a decision-making handrail to fall back on when you’re under pressure. It might appear that the obvious mission statement for mountaineering is ‘get to the top of the mountain’, but in Jake’s experience, it’s anything but this.

Building High Performing Teams

You don’t always get carte-blanche choice over who you work with, but you do need to create strong and trusting professional relationships if you want to prosper. The creation of simple yet universally accepted ground rules by all team members is key to this.

Being able to do the basics well, utilising your support network and self-efficacy are key attributes we can use to enable the maintenance of high performance when faced with a challenge, danger and risk. Retain faith that you will prevail.

Learning from failure

If you can reframe failure as learning or live-test planning, then you can start to appreciate that it is a fundamental part of any journey towards success. If you’re not failing (or at least coming close to failing) then you may not be pushing yourself, or the possibilities enough.

Getting out of your comfort zone

Adopting a growth mindset in order to face up to challenges is fundamental to developing yourself. Only by getting out of your comfort zone and pushing the boundaries will you start to raise your personal performance bar.

Embracing risk

It is impossible to operate without risk, and often the greatest opportunities seem to be surrounded by the greatest risk. What sort of mindset is required to enable a healthy appetite for risk, which balances boldness and recklessness?

Although I had high expectations, Jake exceeded them. We really appreciated how he linked his experience to ours in what came across as a very natural way and the story he had to tell was such a fascinating one that no-one could fail to be enthralled. Feedback from the group has been extremely positive.

Just to say that Jake was a delight - lovely young man and was a big hit with the audience. We will work with...him again.
