Jo Malone has been described as an ‘English scent maverick’ and the woman responsible for creating some of the world’s most-loved fragrances.
Jo worked as a florist and gave facials in her kitchen at night. It was when she met her husband Gary at the age of 19 that their business, featuring her handmade scents and products, took off. She gave her Nutmeg and Ginger Bath Oil as a thank you to her clients and the orders began to flood in. The brand’s signature cream packaging with black edging remains iconic today.
In 1994, Jo Malone opened her first store at 154 Walton Street, London. The store was unique, recreating the atmosphere of a French perfumer’s studio, and quickly became a destination store that put Walton Street firmly on the map. It was in the creation of this store that the core values of the Jo Malone brand were developed – a result of Jo’s passion and inspiration.
In 1999, Jo sold the business to Estée Lauder Companies and remained Creative Director until she left in 2006 having spearheaded the worldwide positioning of the Jo Malone brand.
Two years later in 2008, Jo was honoured with an MBE for her services to the beauty industry.
In 2010, Jo turned her talents to television presenting making her debut on BBC One. The four-part series ‘High Street Dreams’ conceptualised by Jo herself, saw her using her business experience and entrepreneurial spirit to help small businesses realise their dreams of trading on the great British high street. The show successfully helped to create six new British Brands.
Aware that her passion for fragrance never left her, it was following the TV show and falling in love with cooking that inspired Jo to play with food, flavours and colours that she had never used before. Being back in her kitchen, blending ingredients by hand and excited by the process, she soon realised that her instincts were prompting her to create fragrance and she found herself asking ‘could I do it again?’ Possessing an inherent entrepreneurial flair, a head full of ideas and the desire to build another business, Jo decided to follow her instincts and return to the beauty industry. In November 2011, five years after leaving the Jo Malone brand, she launched her new brand JO LOVES to global anticipation. Bottling her undeniable desire to create beautiful and unexpected fragrances, pioneering new products and entertaining experiences, Jo Loves embodies luxury, creativity and innovation.
Jo Malone has bottled the secret to successful branding and product design, which she shares with audiences as an engaging keynote speaker. Jo shares her inspirational journey from mixing innovative body oils in her kitchen to becoming a global icon of luxury fragrance.
