Paul Craven

Globally Renowned Behavioural Economist

Paul founded Paul Craven Partners in 2014 with the specific aim to promote Behavioural Economics in business, believing that a better understanding of psychology – how real people make real decisions in the real world – provides a strong competitive advantage to those firms and individuals who embrace it, whether in investment, sales, technology or business more broadly.

Paul Craven is a well-known industry public speaker on Behavioural Economics (sometimes known as Behavioural Science and Behavioural Finance), and as well as giving keynote talks including at TEDx, offers private consultancy and decision-making workshops.

He has almost 30 years experience in the investment industry, having retired from Goldman Sachs Asset Management at the end of 2013 after six years where he was the Head of European Institutional Business. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Paul worked at PIMCO and Schroders.

Paul now works with the investment committees of the Akzo Nobel and British Steel pension funds. He is also on the ‘panel of experts’ for #ogilvychange, the behavioural science unit of the Ogilvy Group.

He has an MA (Hons) in History from Cambridge University, is a Freeman of the City of London and is a visiting lecturer at the London Business School.

Outside of work, he is privileged to be a member of the exclusive Magic Circle, meaning that he can offer an extra perspective on how “the mind plays tricks.”

Paul regularly tweets about behavioural stuff as @cravenpartners

Paul has made a couple of presentations for me to colleagues at CISI and has never failed to entertain. Paul makes professional, in-depth presentations that not only display his deep understanding of Behavioural Economics, but also get the message across with humour and ….. a little bit of magic. He is an accomplished presenter who never disappoints and if you need someone to speak or coach on Behavioural Economics, I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Laurence Millbrook & Co

Paul’s superb content, combined with captivating examples and practical exercises and his energetic, engaging and fun delivery style make for a “lethal” combination. He does not simply educate his audience—he inspires them. The insights you get out of his talks are valid and useful not only in business but in our personal lives as well. I recommend him wholeheartedly and enthusiastically

Paul’s approach perfectly matches the ethos of behavioural economics, effortlessly marrying rigorous technical analysis with creative thought. He is flexible and accommodating in how he structures his presentations and clearly has both the capacity and desire to bring a performance which is uniquely relevant to the audience he is addressing. From the professional quality of materials he uses it is evident that Paul puts a great deal of preparation into his talks and his relaxed yet stimulating presentation style shows that he clearly enjoys sharing his ideas. Interesting, entertaining, easy-going and professional; I have worked with Paul on several occasions and recommend him wholeheartedly, without hesitation.

Paul provided a highly relevant but very entertaining presentation about behavioural finance and investment to the SAUL Trustee Directors. The result of the presentation was one of the better discussions at a training session that we had. Paul made what can seem a daunting and irrelevant topic accessible and relevant – and the relevance extended into daily life as well as investment. We would have no hesitation in using Paul to work with our Trustee Directors again.
