Stephen Archer

Business analyst, consultant and Former Trustee and Communications Director for the Cutty Sark

Stephen Archer’s expertise and experience uniquely places him to speak on the changes in worldwide economics and structural changes and their impact on your organisation. The ‘new order’ of globalisation is now being rocked, free trade is no longer a given and even democracy cannot be taken for granted.  In short, we have entered a period of instability.

All of these fundamental 21st century changes are happening so fast that the need for a special kind of leadership is now essential. For everyone it is increasingly hard to see through the fog of news and decipher the implications. Employees and customers alike feel the same and look for informed leadership to help them to understand the place of the organisation and the individual in today’s world. Issues such as runaway global debt, trade wars, populism, nationalism, low economic growth rates, artificial intelligence and volatile sovereign leadership are all taking their toll on confidence and despite ‘progress’ there is also a widespread retrenchment in investment. This is understandable with such uncertainty, but an understanding of more certainty is possible.

Stephen Archer 2

Stephen will take you through the state of the planet today and how all of these pieces fit together. He will lay out a clear picture of what is happening and how to lead yourself and your organisation through the coming years. It’s a serious topic but Stephen is an entertaining man – you will have fun on the journey. As he says: “I refuse to get depressed by world events. There is so much craziness going on and feral behaviour amongst politicians. You can turn off the news in horror but I prefer to understand it and see the absurdities and the funny side. If you see the funny side it helps to make sense of it all and give a clearer perspective.”

Stephen Archer has been a consultant to multi-national companies in the USA and Europe at C-suite level. His main areas of expertise are commercial performance and leadership improvement in high-performance organisations. Stephen talks both in the capacity of an advisor to businesses and from the perspective of a business owner and someone who has set up and sold businesses. A decade ago he became a regular commentator on the challenges of the world’s politico-economic flux. In this time of unprecedented uncertainty he brings clarity to issues surrounding Brexit, global leadership and the economic outlook. He was a Trustee and then chairman of Cutty Sark when it went through the disastrous fire and rebuild but was there for the Queen to re-open it in 2012.

"One word sums up MFL; care; for the client, their audience and the outcomes. I have seen this special service reap great dividends” Stephen

Leadership without authority – If you can lead without authority then you can truly lead

Leadership is the elusive secret source in organisations of all types and is increasingly problematic today where loyalty to employers (and the state) are not what they were 25 years ago. Organisations are increasingly matrixed and process driven so how can we lead people who are either independently minded or trained to be inflexible in the age of ‘the computer says no’ ? With examples of modern leadership both succeeding and failing we look at why it is so difficult and how we need to be cognisant of other people’s motivations to be able to be effective. Leadership used to be vested in authority (position, title or role) but authority enjoys little respect in most walks of life today. Effective leadership therefore comes from being able to lead effectively with no vested authority. There are some interesting examples, a hilarious video and there a focus on the concept and dynamics of influence. The world is somewhat divided between ‘mobilisers and muppets’ but to be a mobiliser is within everyone’s reach. People will leave having been entertained and gain a real understanding of leadership and their own potential.

Risk – Take more risks (or regret forever)

The founder of a business takes a risk and but then employees are totally discouraged from taking risks and disempowered as a result and businesses stagnate due to a lack of risk taking. The talk sets out examples of where this has happened (60% of the Fortune 500 in 1998 are no longer in it) and examples of how it happened. E.g. Nokia, in 2000 they had 40% of the global market, look where are they now! There are numerous funny stories to underline the principles of risk. There is also a score card for everyone to complete to assess their own risk appetite and they will be given a gift of a duster. Yes, a duster, to remind them to dust away the cobwebs in their risk averse world! I explore the psychology of risk taking and how people behave when faced with risk. Finally I leave them a guide as to how to take more risks – with courage and with, paradoxically, minimal risk. People will leave having been entertained and with a real understanding of how they can personally embrace risk to advantage and with joy!

Leadership – How to attain it

The holy grail for business today and yet so elusive. Why? Senior leaders are being far more than they were twenty years ago and yet the hunger for organisational effectiveness has not improved. This is a lateral look at what leadership is, what the threats are to it and how to attain leadership skills throughout the organisation so to that you don't need an expensive CEO at all!

Brexit

You hate it. It’s the last thing you want to hear about and it’s (almost) the last thing Stephen Archer wants to talk about but it’s essentially hilarious and hilariously essential. Embrace the most tortuous, opaque and annoying subject of the past twenty years and leave with a spring in your step having stood back and helped view the past three years with fresh eyes and a lot of laughs.

The economy – UK, EU and global. What's going on and how it affects you.

An informative, up to date and humorous guide to the state of the UK, EU, US and global economy and where it is going next. The big questions around China, the BRICs and debt crisis in Greece, Europe and America. How these affect your organisation and planning. We are now in the 4th year of the worst economic crisis for 70 years – what will come out of this? Strange stats and odd arrangements abound!

Customer engagement and innovation. How to outperform your competition and drive growth

Businesses through sales and marketing continue to have a tough time winning and keeping customers – most industries are more competitive than ever and yet there are success stories and approaches to customers that any business can take and it need not be expensive. Stephen's talk will lift the lid on the mistaken accepted wisdoms and the opportunity for every business to improve customer profitability by 30% in one year!

Affymetrix

Stephen Archer steals the show AGAIN. I found the message to be innovative, captivating and humorous. He's absolutely brilliant and delivered a great presentation.

Healthcare Conference Los Angeles 2012

Stephen Archer is a speaker with great charisma. By using illustrations and personal experiences and not being afraid to share his own point of view of the current situation and who is to blame for it, he engages the whole audience, at the same time helping us all to understand the credit crunch a little better.

Warwick Business School

Stephen Archer’s talk is not just a huge entertaining and rather scary warning for our risk averse times but is also an inspiring and economically transformative guide to navigating our way through the uncertainty of Brexit, Trump and Putin. Funny, direct and illuminating (as a result fo working with Stephen I’ve completely changed the way I see my business) his counter intuitive message might just be the most important one you’ll hear all year.
